J. S. Bach composed the ‘Christmas Oratorio’ of which the video shows the first chorus. Many medieval artists devoted their oevre to their Christian community. As did Bach who almost exclusively worked in the very church shown in that video. He initially composed this song to be performed when a king visited town, but Bach decided this piece of music too precious to be forgotten.
During Stalinism the Bach’s religious version was proscribed by the ruling atheists. The second video shows the last East German dictator attending a performance of the king’s version. And it was the same church as shown in the first video where people gathered to initiate the peaceful East German revolution of 1989.
